The nave, apse and ambulatory stonework of L'Eglise Saint-Etienne de Vignory (just north of Chaumont in Champagne) is essentially the same as when it was built in the mid 1000s. The church was the model for the Abbazia di Sant'Antimo - Tuscany's very old and most beautiful abbey church, built in the 1120s and though there are several major differences, it is certainly true that the two 850 - 950 year old churches share a very similar look and feel inside.

Looking back on Italy - lunch behind the old hospice (where they bred the famous Saint Bernard dogs) on the Swiss side of the Gran San Bernardo Pass (2,473 M). The main road below goes past the Swiss border control (by the bus on the right) then anticlockwise round the lake to the Italian border control just to the left of the white building, then down a steep hill which begins at the building at the top left of the lake.
The pass has witnessed much history, including the passage of Napoleon Bonaparte and his 40,000 strong army on their way to pillage Italy in 1800.
