JUNE 2006 - SUMMER IN ITALY

EAST OF PANZANO (CHIANTI)

A beautiful Chianti day leads Dom P back to an old favourite - the Ristoro di Lamole - high in the hills overlooking Panzano - the restaurant with a setting to end all settings + excellent food.

Below - Joint proprietor Paolo (Filippo is at the seaside with his wife Kalinka and their two little children) and Johana, originally from Austria, who was working here when Dom P first appeared on the Chianti scene in 2000.

Below - Dom P concentrates on the Lamole di Lamole Riserva and the salsiccia e fagiole, Johana demonstrates a new Italian device for aerating and measuring a glass of wine (should you want less than a full bottle).

Broom hedge of the Vignamaggio estate on the winding road to Lamole

Further East - the hamlet of Volpaia, which houses a modern winery built into the cottages, and also Carla Barucci's outstanding casalinga / contadina  restaurant "La Bottega" (below).  And you can get your classico or super-tuscan from the winery shop at the base of the torre.

8500 kms and looking well travelled - this summer's leased Peugeot 307 SW

Pig happiness amidst more broom on the ridge road back to Panzano.  This is a big cinghiale area, so the domesticated ladies are probably having an after breakfast dream of a big wild boar poking his snout or whatever through the gate.  It's quiet now because it's summer, but in winter the area is often swarming with hunters in camouflage gear looking for cinghiale to shoot.

Bellatrovata is the "on the road" travel site for Adrian Fletcher and his main website Paradoxplace.  The photographs and commentary first published here are later extended and added to Paradoxplace, a place full of  the art, books, history and stories of the movers and shakers of Medieval and Early Modern Europe, Renaissance Italy and the East - plus Italian Food and European Photo Galleries.   2006 (Spain & Portugal) is a work in progress as we speak.
