Castellina-in-Chianti, centre of one of the most beautiful parts of the world and one of the "Black Rooster" Chianti frontier towns for Florence in the old Florence v Siena days. Now home to Gregory Page and his successful Tuscan / Umbrian Estate Agency, Alfaimmobiliare, to Roberta and Giovanni Baldini and their great restaurant "Tre Porte", and (for June 2006) to Dom Paradox, DOCG, and his exhausted Peugeot and Nikons. |

40 minutes away, high in the hills overlooking Panzano, is our old favourite the Ristoro di Lamole - the restaurant with a setting to end all settings.

In Florence - Amerigo Vespucci finally tracked down
The Dom has looked unsuccessfully for this 1494 Domenico Ghirlandaio fresco "Madonna de la Misericorde" on several previous visits to the church of Ognissanti on the north bank of the Arno in central Florence, and it turns out to be a lunette, high over another Ghirlandaio fresco (of the Deposition) on the right as at the west end of the nave.
The reason for the interest is that the painting features members of the Vespucci family (whose parish church this was) and in particular a young Amerigo Vespucci (face between the man in red and the Madonna). Amerigo (1454 - 1512), after whom the two continents of the Americas were named, would actually have been 40 when the fresco was painted. |
