JUNE 2006 - SUMMER IN ITALY

SPELLO INFIORATA

CORPUS DOMINI 2006 (18 JUNE)

The Spello Infiorata - street tapestries made from flower petals (??) - Sunday June18 2006.  It is not actually clear what the tapestry materials are as they are all cut to a small particle size and the colours seem to extend to a broader colour spectrum than one would find in flowers even in Italy!  It was also noticeable that whilst the pervasive smell was organic, it was certainly not the honey smell of broom, or the sweet smell of roses, and in fact in Dom P's view was not attractive.

The challenge was that half of Umbria had descended on the narrow streets of Spello to have a sneaky beak.  The car parks were full by 9, and the streets themselves had reduced people carrying capacity being as how they were full of  large tapestries !!

A far cry from the two Cistercian abbeys below where crowding was the last thing on one's mind, and the pervasive smell was that of roses and broom.  Interesting also that the abbeys used whole petals and pieces of greenery, thus generating much deeper and more varied textural effects.

Bellatrovata is the "on the road" travel site for Adrian Fletcher and his main website Paradoxplace.  The photographs and commentary first published here are later extended and added to Paradoxplace, a place full of  the art, books, history and stories of the movers and shakers of Medieval and Early Modern Europe, Renaissance Italy and the East - plus Italian Food and European Photo Galleries.   2006 (Spain & Portugal) is a work in progress as we speak.
