ALCOBAÇA - ANOTHER CISTERCIAN MASTERPIECE

|
The huge refectory (above) was matched by a proportionally huge kitchen in which, it was said, 8 oxen could be spit roasted simultaneously. It is not clear how often this full capacity was used! |

In the north transept of the abbey church, the tomb of Inès de Castro - secret lover then wife of the future King Pedro I ("Pedro the Just") - though his dad had her taken out before she could become queen.
Despite being one of the largest churches around, Alcobaça has retained the clean lines and simplicity of the Cistercian ideal. The photo below shows the north transept, with Inès' tomb in the foreground, and Pedro's tomb in the South (distant) transept. The monastery buildings are on the north side of the church to link in with the river.
Tip ...... there were two King Pedros who lived at the same time .... King Pedro I of Portugal (1329 - 1357 - 1367 (38) and King Pedro I of Castile (1334 - 1350 - 1369 (35) aka Pedro the Cruel and Pedro the Lawful - all very confusing. The Castilian Pedro left the world the gob smacking palace bearing his name in the Real Alcazar in Seville .
